As we all have heard, the oceans are the biggest resource, which the humanity have. We have explored only 10% of our oceans and seas, whereas they are 71% of the world’s surface. The idea of our team is to show one side of the whole potential of the oceans and seas, namely electricity production. Ocean energy technologies are currently being developed to exploit the potential of tides and waves. Wave and tidal energy are currently the most mature technologies. Why is it necessary for every country with an ocean outlet (high tides) to invest in the construction of such power stations? Because tidal energy is an inexhaustible resource for electricity generation and does not pollute the environment as no harmful substances are emitted. The amount of electricity produced by this type of power station can be determined much more accurately than other power stations operating with inexhaustible sources (wind, sun, etc.). At 250MW of tidal power, more than 860,000 barrels of oil can be saved per year. Yet, despite all the advantages, they also have some disadvantages. For example, building such a facility requires serious financial investment. The dam wall, on the other hand, is an obstacle to the movement of sediments carried by the water, which leads to their accumulation. Salinity also changes, which also affects ecosystems. Because the tides in our country are too small to build such power stations, our country can begin to make use of the hydropower potential of rivers. Rivers are renewable sources that, in addition to water, are used in energy production. They are part of the oceans and are an important natural resource. The water resources in our country are limited and unevenly distributed, which necessitates the construction of hydroelectric power stations (HPSs). They cause less environmental problems than other power stations, but just like tidal power stations require large financial investments. The share of electricity produced from hydropower stations is low. Electricity produced from renewable sources is only 22% of the energy produced in our country.

The main objective of the project is to develop a website that  informs the world’s community how they can produce and generate energy from water resources and why it is better to save and create energy in this way.

Main Stages in the project implementation

Each one of us had a  key role in the development of the site

Firstly we made up the idea of the project. Secondly we searched for information about the topic. Thirdly we wrote the code for the website. Finally we did the documentation

Our manager- Iliyan had the job to find information on how to get energy from water and he also build the buttons, the slide show menu. He used: HTML, CSS, Javascript. He was helping Stoyan in building the main page.

Our developer- Stoyan made the “main” and “about us” page. He used the following technologies: HTML, CSS.

As the designer- Stoycho was telling us how the website should look like and he also developed a part of the .css files and the documentation.

  1. Our goals: Our site exists with one main goal in mind – to inform the world about the dangers of pollution and how important the ocean is for the survivability of many countries and communities. There are many other sites which present information about the blue economy status of countries but our site differs from them because we use various technologies to integrate up-to-date information about countries on a custom map.
  2. Main stages of development and our contribution to the project: Our project manager,Alexander Hristov, worked on gathering information and preparing the documentation you are reading right now and also creating the presentation material. Our developer, Kristian Milanov, worked on creating an interactive map which upon selecting a continent and a country displays information about the chosen country. The map is currently in a W.I.P state and only a few countries are available as of this moment.Dani Dimov, our graphic designer, worked on creating the body and the visual appearance of our site. He is responsible for making the site aesthetically nice and pleasing for the eyes.

Nowadays the pollution of the water and air is one of the leading problems of the 21st century. Because of this reason our team decided to set the following:

  • To be made website with whom we want to reach bigger part of the people.
  • To inform about problems with the pollution of the air, rivers, seas and the oceans.
